By David Grossack I think I know who is going to pick the next president. It won't be me or you or the great majority of voters. It won't be traditional political machines or hidden power brokers or the conglomerates that supposedly program the voting machines. It will be Big Media. Voters will respond to their prompting as conditioned rodents in a Skinner box ringing a buzzer for pellets. The media has their voters down to a science. It has become obvious that the voters allow themselves to be brainwashed by the newspapers and television, and that independent thought is as rare as pink Kryptonite. Some reminders might be needed as to how we know the media's agenda will be driving the electorate. We can remember the last election. At the beginning Howard Dean was thought to be the unstoppable choice for his party's nomination. Then he got rambunctous after a defeat, yelling a bit and making some overly exuberant noise. I thought it was no big deal. But the press reportedly broadcast the scene about 400 times on the various national networks and cable stations. Dean soon disappeared from the candidacy, people treated him as a laughing stock for no real reasson whatsover, othre than that the press got a video clip of him acting exuberantly. He may be wrong on all the issues ( at least I think he is ), but he was not too crazy. After all, the party of the Left made him their Chairman. The press is now ready to draw the long knives on Hillary Clinton. They are doing it slowly and subtly for now. We are told she has "high negatives', that she is viewed a s" too artificial," "opportunistic and power driven" I don't doubt that this all true, but the Media is turning on Ms. Clinton only because they found somebody they like more. Barack Hussein Obama is a young fresh face in a country anxious to prove it is not racist. Nobody knows much about the man, except that he studied in Islamic schools in Indonesia, he is the son of a Muslim father and speaks in platitudes and generalities. If he has original thoughts he keeps them to himself. But the press is turning this aristocratic mystery man into a serious contender for the job of most powerful man in the world, and we have no idea why. He is young, he is short on experience and he opposed the effort to remove Saddam Hussein, the man with the torture chambers, rape rooms and Scud missiles, from power. The billionaire Hollywood tycoon David Geffen is said to be a very canny picker of political talent and he jumped off the Clinton train for Obama. Someting is up. Newsfolk in every hamlet talk about him, late night comics have him as their guest and the whole Big Media machinery, apparenty on cue has made him the wonder of the year, sort of a political Tiger Woods. I am underwhelmed.. He reminds me of the story of Chauncy Gardiner, the illiterate grounds keeper in Jerzy Kozinski's Being There, nominated for Vice President on a mixture of hype, groupthink and plutocratic whim. I don't know how far Obama will go, but I know one thing. If tehre was ever a media creation, its him. As bizare as the Obama push is, we have to wonder who is pulling Big media's strings to push Obama on us, and why they are doing it.
